It seems like every prep football season there's several preliminary playoffs needed for teams tying for a league's final playoff berth. A number of such ties were possible going into last week's final slate of regular-season action, including a possible four-way tie in Region 2 among Orem, Bingham, Hillcrest and Mountain View (Orem ended up advancing of the four).
However, there's only one special postseason playoff needed this season - Cedar City plays Tuesday at Pine View to decide Region 7's second berth. The winner advances to meet Jordan later this weekend in first-round action.FLIP FLOPS: The sole "extra playoff" doesn't mean that there weren't any ties in region standings after the regular season. In fact, after records and head-to-head competition failed to determine any order, three three-way ties for first place required coin flips or drawings to determine playoff seedings.
In Region 4, the outcome has Highland first, Woods Cross second and Davis third. In Region 6, the seeding order is Tooele, Murray and Jordan. And in Region 8, the one-two-three order seeding is Pleasant Grove, Springville and Provo.
The big losers are those teams relegated to third-seed status. Not only do they face a tougher opponent than those opposing a first- or second-seed squad, but the No. 3 teams also start their playoff trek on the road.
