Salt Lake police detectives are investigating a chase Sunday afternoon during which a rookie police officer fired his gun.
Officer David Knight, who joined the police force in September, fired his .38-caliber revolver at a car that he feared was heading for fellow officer Don Cahoon on Montgomery Street (15th West) near Eighth South. The car, driven by a 22-year-old West Valley man, had been leading police officers on a high-speed chase that began about 2:25 p.m. Sunday at 600 S. Emery Street (1170 West).
Police said Knight's shot hit the car but did not disable it. The chase continued for a several minutes until the car crashed and lost a tire near 700 S. Redwood Road. Two occupants of the vehicle fled on foot but were captured, according to police reports.
Knight's action will be examined by a shooting review board, which is expected to be called next week, said Maj. Sam Leaver.
