Trick-or-treating was canceled Monday night in the western Massachusetts town of Greenfield as police spent Halloween hunting for a teenage murder suspect reportedly obsessed with the "Friday the 13th" series of horror films.

In an effort to calm jittery residents and prevent another attack, city officials also canceled the traditional Halloween parade. Parents instead were asked to escort costumed youngsters door to door along the tree-lined streets during daylight Sunday and again Monday.Few homes had pumpkins on their porches or jack-o'-lanterns in the windows, and police patrols were unusually heavy in the community of 19,000 as detectives pressed their weeklong search for the suspect, Mark Branch, 18, of Greenfield, wanted in the mutilation murder of a female college student.
