The Salt Lake County Jail's new booking facility was scheduled to open for business Sunday, the sheriff's office announced Friday.

The $3.5 million add-on to the jail will expedite booking procedures, which have been bogged down in the old facility because of a lack of space, said jail Capt. Joe Gee.Police officers on Friday familiarized themselves with the booking facility and toured the new 60-bed mental health unit, opened in December.

Although booking will be smoother, the new facility is expected to do little to alleviate the jail's overcrowding, Gee said.
