Poachers attacked a park headquarters and slaughtered the last five white rhinos living on Kenya's public lands in what one conservationist termed a "tremendous blow" to efforts to save the rare animals.

Kenyan authorities confirmed Monday that poachers Sunday night raided a section of the Meru National Park, 130 miles northeast of Nairobi, in search of white rhino horn, which is highly prized in the Middle East and Asia for its alleged medicinal qualities.
