A Kearns boy, 13, was in serious condition Monday in Primary Children's Medical Center after being buried Sunday in sand at a gravel pit at 5230 W. 56th South.
Tyler Hitz was injured about 5:40 p.m. when a sand embankment collapsed on him as he played with a group of neighborhood boys. A hospital spokesman said Hitz suffered bruises, rib fractures and damage to some vertebrae.A Salt Lake County sheriff's spokesman said Hitz and several other boys, ranging in age from 10 to 13, were playing and had been digging along a 40-foot embankment. As the other boys began to leave, Hitz continued digging when the embankment gave way.
The sheriff's spokesman said the sand was crystallized into large chunks that helped prevent Hitz from choking. Several boys ran for help while the others began digging for Hitz.
Area residents and deputy sheriffs arrived and extricated the youth, who was then taken to Holy Cross Jordan Valley Hospital.
