An unidentified man was found dead Saturday afternoon in a narrow, sloped yard behind a lower Avenues apartment house, Salt Lake police said.

No obvious wounds were found on the body, said Lt. Joel Campbell. The state Medical Examiner will perform an autopsy to determine the cause of death."The whole thing looks suspicious," Campbell said, adding, "Some rigor mortis had set in, so he'd been there awhile."

The victim appeared to be black or Tongan, between the ages of 25 and 40. He was found about 4 p.m. at 143 E. First Ave. The body was found lying in a sloped, enclosed back yard below a 7-foot stone retaining wall. Police were unable to determine if the man had fallen into the yard and died there, or if he had been killed at the site or died elsewhere and his body dumped on the leaf-covered hill.
