Chinese family planners Thursday noted a slackening of the population explosion in the first half of this year.

According to a nationwide survey of 500,000 households, there were 8.84 births and 3.39 deaths per thousand people in the first six months of 1988, for a natural increase of 5.45 per thousand.Members of the survey team said that compared to 10.04 births in the first half of 1987 and 23.26 births for that entire year.
