Four Navajo men, all residents of Monument Valley, were arrested and charged Friday in connection with the killing of two Navajo police officers in San Juan County last December, the U.S. attorney's office said.

Thomas Cly and Marques Atene, both 22, were arraigned before U.S. Magistrate Ronald N. Boyce in U.S. District Court for Utah on Friday afternoon. They had been apprehended by FBI agents about 7 a.m. Friday in Monument Valley.Vinton Bedoni, 31, and Ben Atene Jr., 24, a cousin to the younger Atene, were arrested separately Friday afternoon, also in Monument Valley. Their arraignments probably will be Saturday.

All four men have been charged with first-degree murder and aiding and abetting in the deaths of Navajo Police Officers Andy Begay and Roy Lee Stanley, on Dec. 5.

"We hope and believe these arrests will lead to the resolution of this matter," U.S. Attorney Brent Ward said Friday afternoon. He called the investigation thus far extensive and unprecedented in many ways because of the remote location of the murders.
