A car bomb exploded outside a shopping center in the northeastern town of Witbank during morning rush-hour Monday, killing two people and wounding at least 35 others, a police spokesman said.

The bomb exploded around 8:14 a.m. outside the OK shopping center in Witbank, 80 miles northeast of Johannesburg, damaging 16 other vehicles and leaving the area littered with shards of glass and debris.Police spokesman Capt. Reuben Bloomberg, correcting an earlier report that two black men died, said the victims were a black man and a black woman. At least 35 other people were wounded, including a woman listed in serious condition at a nearby hospital.

Damage to the shopping center was "quite extensive," Bloomberg said.
