Peter Mallett used a strong service and an aggressive net game Saturday to win the Canyon Racquet Club Open over BYU senior David Harkness.
Mallett, a tennis pro at the Canyon Racquet Club, beat Harkness, 6-4, 6-2. Mallett pocketed $800. Mallett broke early in the first set, then held to win. In the second, he served to win at 2-all, then won the next four games for the match.In the all-Utah women's final, Michelle Mras, the No. 1 seed, beat teammate Kristen Seigmund, 6-4, 6-1.
In doubles, University of Utah's Brendon Bowyer and Chris Entzel beat the BYU team of Harkness and George Chingas, 6-4, 6-4. In the women's doubles, Mras and Susie Costa beat another Utah team of Julie Kempin and Ruth Ann Stevens, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.
In the mixed doubles final, Mras and Mallett teamed up to beat Kempin and Greg Menges, 6-2, 6-4.
