A small plane crashed while the pilot apparently was trying to land on a narrow, winding road in one of Arizona's most scenic areas, killing four people and critically injuring a fifth.

The single-engine Piper 300 crashed Sunday in an oak thicket in Oak Creek Canyon, about 10 miles north of here. The pilot apparently was trying to land on scenic, two-lane U.S. 89A, which parallels Oak Creek in the canyon between Sedona and Flagstaff, said Coconino County Detective Trevan Woolbright.
