Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, said Friday that he does not believe rumors Tooele Army Depot might be a candidate for closing next year.
Congress this week passed a bill setting up a commission to recommend closing of obsolete military bases. Hatch said he voted against the bill only "to send a message to those people," presumably the commission.Sen. Jake Garn, R-Utah, and Hatch said they would not object to taking Fort Douglas off the military base rolls if it would save the Pentagon money. Garn said the fort would remain in any case, under different control.
Also, Garn said he will persist in blocking a measure to help Clive Kincaid, the environmentalist who built a home in a wilderness study area. The bill to which it has been attached may be passed without it, he added.
