The Salt Lake Chapter of World Runners will sponsor a 5K novelty run Oct. 15 to benefit local anti-hunger efforts and draw attention to the problem of world hunger.

Race participants will run the course while carrying cans of food to be donated to Utahns Against Hunger at the end of the race. Organizers are offering runners a 15-second handicap for each food item they carry while running.According to Utahns Against Hunger spokesman Grady Walker, the emergency food pantry system in Salt Lake area faces a critical shortage of food. Demand is at an all-time high and pantries are having trouble maintaining adequate supplies. Powdered milk, infant formula and baby food are in particularly short supply.

The run begins at 9 a.m. at the University of Utah Research Park. Registration starts at 7:30 a.m.
