Granite Furniture Co., a major retailer in Sugar House for 78 years, has begun construction of a new 75,000-square-foot branch store in West Jordan.

The one-level, brick facility is being built at the Fox Crossing shopping center at 1500 W. 90th South and is scheduled for a spring 1989 opening."Granite Furniture recognizes the vast growth that has taken place in the south end of the valley and feels this will continue," said Stephen C. Richards, president. "Our new store will provide many new jobs for the residents in this area."

Paul R. Tanner, a 24-year veteran with Granite and currently sales manager of the Salt Lake store, will be manager of the West Jordan operation. Tanner started with Granite while still in high school and has worked in everything from warehousing and delivery to buying and sales.

Granite Chairman John D. Richards Sr. said the new store will carry a full line of home furnishings, including appliances, electronics, floor coverings and bedding. It will also include display and service space and delivery facilities that will make possible immediate delivery in the South Valley area.

"It will be decorated in today's modern and popular color schemes . . . (and) we will provide free decorator assistance for those patrons who desire it," said Richards Sr. He said the store will place a strong emphasis on electronics and appliances.

The new West Jordan store closely follows completion of remodeling and expansion of Granite's store in Provo. Richards Sr. said the company's expansion program indicates Granite's confidence in the Utah home furnishings market.

Parking for 135 cars will be provided with the new building. Architect is James R. Child and Associates. Layton Construction is general contractor.
