British bookmakers made Vice President George Bush the overwhelming odds-on favorite to win November's presidential elections after Thurday's televised debate with Democrat challenger Michael Dukakis.

Ladbroke bookmakers tipped Bush at 1-6 on, with the Massachussets governor trailing at 3-1 against. That means a bettor who put $6 on Bush would win $1 if the Republican candidate wins. A $6 bet on Dukakis would reap $18 if he wins.

William Hill bookmakers set Bush's chances at a more modest 2-7 and Dukakis at 9-4.

"We think Bush's betting odds will improve further, even in the course of today. He's a very hot tip, seen from here and Dukakis is not showing any signs of closing up," a William Hill spokesman said.
