John Stockton was named the Jazz's most valuable player for 1987-88 in voting by his teammates as part of the first Utah Jazz Awards.

Former NBA great Bob Lanier was the speaker at the awards dinner hosted by the Salt Lake Area Chamber of Commerce at the Marriott Hotel Wednesday night.Other awards were voted by fans in the Salt Palace. The winners: Most Improved Player, Bobby Hansen; Best Offensive Player, Karl Malone; Best Defensive Player, Mark Eaton; Playmaker, Stockton; Favorite Player, Thurl Bailey; and Community Service, Bailey.

Jazz owner Larry Miller also received a special award from the chamber of commerce for his effort to keep pro basketball in Utah.
