The Utah Society of Professional Engineers will sponsor a math competition for seventh- and eighth-grade students this fall as part of the Mathcounts program.
The program involves teachers in coaching students to prepare them for competition at regional, state and national levels. Students who make school math teams will compete against other "mathletes" in February. The Utah society expects that as many as 1,000 students will enter the local program this year, with as many as 7.4 million nationally.
State winners will go to Washington, D.C., for the final competition in May. Scholarships of $10,000, $6,000 and $4,000 will be awarded first, second and third place winners nationally. Coaches of the winners will receive free visits to NASA space facilities.
The engineering society will supply contest information and coaching materials to interested teachers and will assist in coaching students. For information, contact Bruce N. Hutchinson, 6671 Nottingham Circle, West Jordan, UT 84084, telephone 255-0377.
