A man fleeing from police Monday night was stopped only after he tried to run down an officer and after one shot was fired, police say.
South Salt Lake police Sgt. Van Midgley said officers attempted to stop a car northbound on State Street near 32nd South at 11:25 p.m. when the driver rammed a patrol car then sped away, leading Midgley, three other officers and deputies from the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Department on a short but intense chase at speeds exceeding 85 mph.A few minutes later "a South Salt Lake vehicle attempted to stop the fleeing vehicle from going into red light in an intersection with heavy traffic," Midgley said, when the driver of the fleeing vehicle lost control and attempted to run down a police officer who was on foot in the intersection of 27th South and Seventh East.
An officer fired at the man at 650 E. 27th South, but the man continued to flee west until he was hemmed in by police and sheriff's vehicles in a rolling road block at 3200 S. Fifth East.
Police had not released the names of either the man, who was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail, or the officer who fired the shot, Midgley said.
