Testimony in the case of two Teamster officials accused of embezzling $700,000 from the union in a payroll padding scheme could have an effect on a pending civil case by the government to take over the nation's largest union.

On June 28 the government filed suit in New York City in an attempt to wrest control of the union on the grounds that the 1.7 million-member organization has been controlled by organized crime through intimidation and violence.The government has long accused the Teamsters of maintaining ties to organized crime.
