Bob Smith, a member of the American Party, announced his candidacy for the U.S. Senate Wednesday, challenging Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah.

Smith, a UNISYS employee, vowed to stop Soviet expansion into other countries and government expansion into the lives of American citizens."I am concerned with the rapid erosion of our constitutional liberty and intrusion of government into every facet of citizens' lives," he said.

Smith believes senators and congressmen no longer reflect the will and best interests of the people. He said, for example, that Hatch, his Republican opponent, has now moved toward endorsing national health care a program Smith says wrecked the British economy.

Smith also said he is against recent nuclear weapons reduction treaties negotiated by President Reagan and Soviet Leader Mikhail Gorbachev. He said the development of nuclear weapons freed America from the threat of war with conventional weapons, so nuclear weapons reductions is a step backward.
