the youngest woman in Utah history to face murder charges as an adult - is scheduled to begin Jan. 5.
Sherard, 17, appeared Friday before 3rd District Judge David S. Young, who scheduled the trial. She is charged with second-degree murder in the March 7, 1987, stabbing death of 23-year-old Ruby Kelly, who was killed during a fight at a party at 1028 W. Seventh South.Sherard was 16 when she was charged, but a juvenile court judge certified her to stand trial as an adult because of the seriousness of the crime and her criminal record.
However, Sherard, who was staying in a foster home, failed to appear for an arraignment in January before Young, who issued a warrant for her arrest.
Police arrested Sherard last month in a crack house in Tacoma, Wash.
