A children's fiction writer will speak on "Recollections of a Mormon Novelist" Thursday at Brigham Young University.

Virginia Sorensen, a John Newberry Medal winner, will speak at 11 a.m. in 2084 Knight Humanities Building.A colloquium on Sorensen's work will be at 2 p.m. the same day in 122 and 123 Alumni House.

A native of Provo, Sorenson is the author of dozens of novels, children's books and short stories. She won the Children's Book Award from the Child Study Association in 1955 for her book, "Plain Girl." In 1957 her book, "Miracles on Maple Hill," was awarded the John Newberry Medal of the American Library Association for most distinguished contribution of the year to children's literature.

She received a bachelor's degree at BYU in 1934.

An avid traveler, she has made Morocco her home for the past 20 years.
