The Senate Labor Committee Wednesday approved a bill to direct the Department of Health and Human Services to renegotiate a settlement with San Juan County over its nursing home.

The home received a total of $195,000 in construction grants under the Hill-Burton program, $130,000 in and 1968 and $65,000 in 1970. The department has sought to force the home to return the money, Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, said Wednesday, because the home was sold after officials of the facility realized in 1987 they could not continue to finance the operation to provide care to indigent patients.Hatch introduced the legislation to help relieve the county of a portion of the obligation.
