The unoccupied Soldier Summit Lodge, one of four commercial buildings in this small town, burned to the ground Sunday despite efforts of fire crews from three counties.

Jay Davis, Wasatch County fire chief, said fire crews from Helper and Price in Carbon County already were at the scene when the first Wasatch crews arrived about 1 p.m. But the flames already had advanced to the point where the building could not be saved.Joined by firefighters from Spanish Fork in Utah County, fire crews concentrated on protecting nearby buildings and homes.

The lodge is owned by Keith Walters of American Fork but was under lease to Thomas Brackenbury, who lived in a nearby motel. The two motel units nearest the lodge were being demolished, however, which helped keep the fire from spreading.

The lodge was built about six years ago but never had been operated commercially. Damage was estimated at $125,000. The cause of the fire had not been determined.

A Wasatch County fire crew remained at the site overnight to guard against a flare-up.
