Share prices on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Thursday closed above 27,000 points for the first time, while the dollar fell marginally against the Japanese yen in quiet trading.

The Nikkei Stock Average of 225 selected issues, a 54.71-point winner Wednesday, reached a record high for the fifth time since last Thursday, adding another 125.80 points, or 0.46 percent, to finish the day at 27,111.35.Since the upward trend began at the end of March, the Nikkei index surged by about 1,400 points.
