Two Utah State Prison inmates were arraigned on firearms and drug charges Tuesday in 2nd District Court.

Kim N. Rafel, 28, and Frank A. Brown, 28, pleaded not guilty to possession of a firearm by a restricted person, possession of cocaine and possession of drug paraphernalia.A third defendant, Deborah Drane, 32, West Valley City, was arraigned on similar charges last week.

According to court records, the three defendants were arrested shortly after midnight on May 13 by Davis County sheriff's deputies investigating a vehicle off U.S. 89 near a South Weber convenience store.

The deputies reported seeing firearms in the car on approaching it and, after a further search, turned up more weapons, stolen property and drugs, according to court records.

Rafel and Brown were both on parole from the state prison and were returned to prison on parole violations.

Drane pleaded not guilty to two charges of possession of cocaine and heroin, both third-degree felonies, and misdemeanor charges of carrying a concealed weapon and possession of drug paraphernalia. She is scheduled for trial Oct. 26.

Rafel and Brown pleaded not guilty to charges of possession of a firearm by a restricted person, a second-degree felony; possession of cocaine, a third-degree felony; and possession of drug paraphernalia, a Class B misdemeanor.

Judge Rodney S. Page scheduled their trial for Nov. 16. Defense attorney Glen Cella said he will file motions within 10 days to dismiss the charges for lack of a speedy trial, to suppress some of the evidence seized, and for separate trials for the two men.
