A fireball lit up the sky over a wide area of central and eastern Oregon Monday night, and at least one expert is pretty sure callers who flooded police switchboards saw a "big old, stony meteorite" breaking up in the atmosophere.

State Police in Bend and Deschutes County sheriff's officers said many reports were received of the bright light or lights shortly before 7 p.m."We had multiple reports of it, looking like burning things falling from the sky," said a State Police dispatcher in Bend.
