A jury Friday cleared former pediatric nurse Ann Green of charges she murdered two of her infants and tried to kill a third, finding she was not criminally responsible because of psychosis triggered by childbirth.

The verdict, reached after nearly 10 hours of deliberation over two days, was the first in the state based on an insanity defense tied to "post-partum psychosis," said Green's lawyer, Michael Dowd. After nearly 10 hours of deliberation over two days, the panel at state Supreme Court in Manhattan delivered what Green's lawyer, Michael Dowd, called the state's first verdict based on an insanity defense tied to "post-partum psychosis."

Members of Green's family gasped with relief as the jury foreman read "not responsible" verdicts for each of the two counts of second-degree murder and a single count of second-degree attempted murder.
