Bangladesh's Parliament has approved the death penalty for people convicted of drug offenses or trafficking in women, the government announced Friday. The action was taken late Thursday by the 300-seat Parliament, in which President Hussain Muhammad Ershad's ruling Jatiya Party has a four-fifths majority. Ershad was expected to sign the new laws quickly. The legislation sets a minimum penalty of seven years in jail and a maximum penalty of death for drug-related crimes. Earlier, the maximum sentence was 10 years in jail.
