The ill-fated Veterans Peace Convoy, which has been trying without success for almost a month to deliver vehicles and humanitarian aid to Nicaragua, was halted again Saturday by federal inspectors short of an international bridge between the United States and Mexico.

Customs Service spokesman Don Ramey said convoy members, supporters and vehicles gathered about 50 yards from the bridge between Laredo and Nuevo Laredo, forcing federal officials to route southbound traffic to a newer, larger bridge in the border city.About 100 convoy members and supporters and 75 uniformed and plainclothes officers were engaged in what one witness described as a "Mexican standoff--each side is waiting for the other one to make a move," until the convoy moved aside and traffic resumed.
