An Egyptian government official was fined 750 pounds ($1,275) for shoplifting at the Selfridges department store in London.

Soraya Abdulla, first undersecretary of state for education, pleaded not guilty and said she accidentally walked out of the store while looking for a cashier to accept payment for goods she had chosen.She was arrested Aug. 29 after walking out of the store on Oxford Street in London's West End carrying four ties, a brooch and four pairs of earrings worth about $370 in all.
