Known global cases of AIDS rose by 3,678, or 3 percent, in August to a total 111,854, the World Health Organization reported Friday.

The United States accounted for 71,171 cases, or an unchanged 64 percent, of the world's cases of acquired immune deficiency syndrome.August's increase of 3 percent was much lower than the 7.7 percent increase in July although it was about average for previous months.

The sharp rise in July was caused mainly by cases being diagnosed in African countries because of improved detection and reporting.

WHO totals are cumulative since the U.N. specialized agency first began keeping statistics on AIDS in 1979.
