Salt Lake City and the Utah Transit Authority have agreed to jointly replace asphalt bus loading zones with concrete pads on Main Street between South Temple and Fourth South Streets.

Buses constantly pulling in and out of loading zones have caused asphalt to ripple; the concrete pads are expected to withstand high use better, officials said. The City Council has agreed to contribute $44,000 to the effort, while UTA will pay the remaining $220,000.

Street crews will begin the project later this month and plan to work on a single pad at time to minimize traffic disruption. Completion is expected in October, officials said.
