Police fought demonstrators with tear gas, water cannons and clubs Friday, injuring at least 67, at a rally culminating an eight-hour general strike against the government's economic policies.

The demonstration forced the cancellation of a speech by labor leaders at a rally of between 15,000 to 20,000 persons, while police charged into some marchers with clubs and fired tear gas.Mounted police in steel helmets patrolled downtown streets near the government palace to force back demonstrators, who were protesting an economic austerity program consisting of higher rates for public utilities and higher prices for imported goods.
