Nearly 500 Utah credit union presidents, directors and volunteers held a mock gubernatorial election and picked Democrat Ted Wilson by a 2-1 margin over Republican Gov. Norm Bangerter and independent candidate Merrill Cook.
Of the 491 people voting at the Utah League of Credit Unions' annual fall institute, 239, or 49 percent favored Wilson. Bangerter and Cook each received 126 votes, or 25.5 percent, officials said Monday.League spokesman Chris Kerecman said participants heard from each of the candidates in separate speeches during the conference. And all three said they favor keeping the tax-exempt status of Utah's 207 credit unions.
The mock election was an "accurate gauge of the current sentiment all over Utah regarding the gubernatorial race," Kerecman said. "The people attending this conference represent all areas of the state and virtually all types of business and industry."
