Ten people were arrested early Friday morning in Salt Lake City on drug trafficking charges in what an FBI spokesman said was the culmination of a one-year undercover operation.
Cal Clegg, FBI spokesman in Salt Lake City, said grand jury indictments were returned Wednesday and sealed until Friday. He said the 10 men, who he said are alleged to be "major dealers," will be arraigned Friday afternoon on various counts of engaging in the distribution of cocaine and heroin and other counts involving the felonious possession of firearms.Utahns indicted were: Danny Clyde Smith, 33; Tony Kiete Smith, 31; Calvin George Smith Jr., 46; Johnny Medina Duran, 35; Kenneth Dean Amodt, 33; Christopher Leo Loya, 26; Robert Steven Smith, 35; and Douglas Reed Jones, 33. Also indicted were Daniel Anthony Fonseca, 29, California, and Steven Scott Pannell, 38, Kansas City, Mo.
Clegg said the joint investigation recovered considerable stolen material from residences and business properties. He said numerous weapons were recovered, most of them on their way to other previously convicted felons with drug trafficking backgrounds.
"The arrested individuals represent 10 of approximately 31 people arrested to date in this same investigation," Clegg said.
Additional indictments are anticipated in the future.
