A tiny and exceptionally rare Islamic gold coin, minted 64 years after the death of the prophet Mohammed, sold for a record $277,200, Sotheby's auction house said.

The price for the coin Thursday set an auction record for an Islamic coin and for any coin auctioned in Britain, the firm said."It was bought with a telephone bid by a Middle Eastern collector who has asked us not to identify him," said Tim Eden, head of the firm's coins department.

The seller also remained anonymous.

The pure gold coin dinar is 34-inch in diameter and nearly 13 centuries old. Mohammed died in A.D. 632 and the coin was made in 696.
