A Brazilian jetliner with more than 98 people aboard was hijacked during a domestic flight Thursday, officials said.

Mona Cury, a spokeswoman for the VASP, or Viacao Aerea Sao Paulo airline, said Flight 375 was on its daily run from the Amazon jungle city of Porto Velho to Rio de Janeiro on the southeast Atlantic coast when it was taken by hijackers."The last we heard it was flying over Brasilia. We haven't had contact with the plane and don't know anything more," Cury said by telephone from the airline's headquarters in Sao Paulo.

The airport authority at Rio's Galeao International Airport said "an incident" occurred after the plane, a Boeing 737-300, made a scheduled stop in Belo Horizonte, 288 miles northwest of Rio.

"The plane took off from Confins airport in Belo Horizonte on schedule at 10:45 a.m. Afterwards there was an incident on board," airport authority spokeswoman Fatima Pereira dos Santos told The Associated Press. She said details of the incident were not known.
