Mike Spillman, of Wendover, has been honored by Union Pacific Corp. for helping prevent the derailment of a Union Pacific train.

The 38-year-old Kaiser Chemical Co. employee was watching a train go by a plant near Wendover when he noticed a car was derailed and hitting ties as the train moved along. He reacted quickly. He jumped in his pickup truck, drove ahead of the train, and warned the engineer, who was able to stop the train 100 feet from a switch that may have derailed the entire train.

"We really appreciate the help of Mike in averting a serious accident," said Mike Connolly, Union Pacific's Nevada superintendent-transportation services.

For his courageous service, Spillman was presented two shares of Union Pacific Corp. stock and a mounted locomotive.
