Ed Flanders, who played a compassionate hospital administrator on television's "St. Elsewhere," was hospitalized in guarded condition after his car plunged down a 400-foot embankment, officials said. The 53-year-old actor was driving near the northern California town of Salyer when his convertible left the road and went down the hill Monday, officials said. Flanders was ejected from the car. He was taken to a nearby hospital with head and chest injuries and was in guarded condition in the intensive care unit Tuesday, a nursing supervisor said. Flanders played the kind-hearted but self-righteous Dr. Donald Westphall on "St. Elsewhere."
