The Utah Division of Oil, Gas and Mining says reclamation projects for abandoned coal mines in Coalville and the Huntington Canyon region of Emery County have started and will be completed by year end.
The federal reclamation program, funded by fees levied against mining companies, rehabilitates former mining areas for safer public use."We will have completed reclamation of all known health and safety hazards in the Summit County region, and are working with the (Bureau of Land Management) and U.S. Forest Service to reclaim areas of high concern like Huntington Canyon where there is so much hunting and camping," said Mary Wright, abandoned mine reclamation program administrator.
The Coalville project, contracted with Heber city construction firm High Mountain Builders for $35,575, includes 19 portal closures, restoration of five mine caving areas, cleanup of nine coal waste piles and revegetation of 5.1 acres.
Minchey Digging of Cleveland, Utah was the successful bidder on a $99,971 reclamation job in Huntington Canyon.
