One University of Utah football player has quit the team and one returned, following the Utes' 48-20 loss to Hawaii last weekend.
Starting defensive end James Thompson and backup defensive tackle Wallin Fanene told Coach Jim Fassel last week they were quitting the team. Neither suited up for last Saturday night's loss to Hawaii. Fassel said Tuesday that Thompson has asked to be reinstated, but Fanene refused to meet with him. "A kid makes a mistake and wants to come back, he can earn his way back," said Fassel of Thompson. "I told him he must earn his position back."He added that Fanene had apparently quit "for good."
The players missed most of last week's practice sessions. Thompson, a 6-1, 225-pound senior, has five tackles this year while Fanene, a 6-2, 270-pound transfer from Spokane Falls Junior College, had four tackles.
Fassel said Thompson will suit up for this weekend's game against UTEP.
