U.S. Secretary of Labor Ann McLaughlin filed a lawsuit Monday against a Provo man and his company that accuses them of owing more than $36,000 in unpaid overtime wages to 17 employees.

The civil suit seeks a ruling from Utah federal Judge Thomas Greene permanently prohibiting Ronald Hatfield and Hatfield Fire Protection Inc. from violating provisions of the federal Fair Labor Standards Act.The employees have worked weeks "longer than 40 hours since Aug. 17, 1985, without compensation" at the federally mandated rate of not less than 11/2 times the regular pay, the suit said.
