New communications equipment is being installed and tested on the fifth floor of the new Salt Lake City Public Safety Building, 301 E. Second South. The computers and radios will serve the fire and police departments, which have begun moving their offices into the $6 million building. The police department, which will occupy all but one of the eight floors, hopes to save hundreds of thousands of dollars a year by combining their patrol divisions, which have had separate buildings on the east and west sides of the city. Detective, administrative and other offices that have been housed in the Metropolitan Hall of Justice, 450 S. Third East, will also move into the new building. In addition to the savings, Maj. O.J. Peck said the move has other benefits. `It's like a big reunion. People who haven't seen much of each other for years are excited about working together again."
