A 4-year-old Taylorsville boy died Monday night at Primary Children's Medical Center, the apparent victim of a hit-and-run accident at the Salt Lake County dump.
The driver may have been unaware the boy was struck, an official said.Jaron Garff, 4894 S. Hill Mar Circle (1890 West) died about 9:50 p.m. from multiple injuries, a hospital spokeswoman said.
The boy, his parents and two siblings were at the dump, 5660 W. 13th South, about 6 p.m. when a pickup truck left the landfill and probably struck the boy, Salt Lake Police Lt. Larry Stott said.
"There's a very good chance the truck ran over the boy and didn't even know it," he said.
The three youngsters were playing near the truck a short distance from their parents. Immediately after the truck left the parents heard Jaron yell that he couldn't breath and saw him stand up with serious head injuries, Stott said.
The parents rushed the boy to Pioneer Valley Hospital, passing the truck possibly involved on the way. The child was flown by helicopter to Primary Children's where he died.
Police are searching for a 1978 or 1979 Ford short-bed pickup truck, two-tone green with a camper shell, Stott said.
