Syndicated columnist Carl Rowan, charged with possessing an unregistered pistol during a shooting at his home, told a jury he thought the weapon was exempt from the city's strict gun-control ordinance.

Rowan, 63, waited for jurors to decide whether he was wrong to use the gun after being awaken by trespassers outside his home. Closing arguments to the jury were scheduled for Wednesday.Rowan, a staunch advocate of gun control, testified Tuesday that he believed the .22-caliber pistol he fired at a teenage intruder did not have to be registered.
