ACLU LASHES OUT AT BUSH

THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE AMERICAN CIVIL LIBERTIES UNION ON TUESDAY ACCUSED VICE PRESIDENT BUSH OF "MCCARTHYITE SLANDER" AGAINST THE ORGANIZATION DURING HIS NATIONALLY TELEVISED DEBATE SUNDAY NIGHT WITH DEMOCRAT MICHAEL DUKAKIS. THE OFFICIAL, IRA GLASSER, SAID BUSH'S STATEMENT THAT THE ACLU IS INVOLVED IN A LAWSUIT SEEKING TO REMOVE THE TAX EXEMPTION OF THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH IS WRONG, ASIS A SUGGESTION THAT THE GROUP FAVORS ALLOWING CHILD PORNOGRAPHY. "THAT KIND OF SLUR, THAT KIND OF MCCARTHYITE SLANDER, IN CHARACTERIZING WHAT THE ACLU DOES, ISOUTRAGEOUS AND IT DOES NOT CHARACTERIZE WHAT THE ACLU IS ABOUT." GLASSER SAID. HE REFERRED TO THE 1950'S ANTI-=COMMUNIST CAMPAIGN OF SEN. JOSEPH MCCARTHY, R-WIS., IN WHICH MANY PEOPLE WERE TARRED AS COMMUNIST SYMPATHIZERS WITHOUT PROOF.
