Salt Lake police officials will investigate whether Officer Greg Smith was negligent in firing his gun during a weekend tussle with a prostitute suspect.

Smith had picked up two women on south State Street about 1 a.m. Saturday and drove them to the parking lot of a restaurant at 1650 S. State, said vice squad Lt. Roger Kinnersley. When Smith informed the women they were under arrest, they began to resist, according to police reports.

During the struggle, Smith's .38-caliber revolver dislodged from its holster and fell on the seat of his car. The officer grabbed it and continued the struggle, which moved outside the car.

"With two females in one hand and the gun in the other," Smith pulled the trigger and the gun discharged, Kinnersley said.

Investigators were unable to find the bullet, he said.

An internal shooting review board will determine whether the shooting was justifiably or negligently accidental, the lieutenant said.
