The world's first exclusively jazz conservatory will be built in Durham, N.C., and affiliated with Duke University, officials announced.

The Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz, a $12 million facility, is scheduled for opening by 1991, and those involved hope to raise a $50 million endowment for its operation.Monk was born in Rocky Mount, N.C.

Trumpeter Clark Terry will head an academic council designing the curriculum. Conservatory advisers include Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Steve Allen, Art Blakey, Branford Marsalis and Bill Cosby.
